Unbelievably easy homemade crock pot apple butter recipe, healthy and uses only few ingredients. Rich, decadent and with beautiful caramel color- you will love to spread this butter on bread for breakfast or eat it by spoon.
Since we moved to the Central Valley, we can enjoy apple picking all august long and especially in September. We love to snack on raw apples as much as preserving them. This time i tried to make an apple butter and results were phenomenal! The butter was silky smooth and very sweet, even though i didn’t use any sugar.
How to make sugar free apple butter.
I love to cook healthy so sometimes i try a sugar free version of this delicious spread. Refined sugar free of course. Apples are so high in sugar anyways, when you slow cook them for over then 10 hours it feels like its getting sweeter and sweeter. Add vanilla extract for extra flavor and ground cinnamon. I like how pumpkin spice mix taste with the apple butter too. So, if you decided to make a sugar free butter, make sure you pick the right apples for it.
Best apples for slow cooker apple butter.
The sweetest and the best apples in my opinion are Fuji and Pink lady. I have a pink lady tree in my backyard and can pick apples there. Mcintosh, Gala and Red Delicious are absolutely wonderful for this recipe too.If you decide to go with tart apples, make sure to adjust added sugar to make the butter sweet to taste.
How many apples in a pound
This recipe calls for 3 pounds of apples. Apples of course vary in sizes but typically its about 4 small apples per pound or 2 large. Also one medium apple makes 1 1/3 a cup when sliced or cubed.
What is the difference between applesauce and apple butter?
Apple butter has a consistency of a spread when cooled, has a beautiful caramel color and cooks in slow cooker for about 10-12 hours. Apple sauce usually takes only 20 minutes to cook on stove top. Its much lighter in color and doesn’t have that heavy apple flavor. Its great for snaking.
Use apple butter on pancakes, waffles. Spread it on a piece of toast or add in to your yogurt. My kids like to eat it by spoon. Also try my homemade cinnamon refined sugar free apple sauce recipe. Just as good!

When you say sugar free apple butter and mentioned refined sugar what do you mean by that? The recipe calls for brown sugar so I'm confused. This looks delicious!

Hi Pam, thank you for the question. Sugar free is only an option for this recipe, explained in the post. If you have very sweet apples you don't really need to add any kind of sugar. The butter will be very sweet on its own.
