apple chip in the hand

A while ago i tried some yummy apple chips they sell in Costco. They were crunchy, sweet, healthy and just delicious. My kids loved it so as my husband and me. I had this idea of trying to make it at home. I don’t have a dehydrator (yet) so i tried to make them in my air fryer.

With my beloved Gourmia air fryer i had no problems making healthy snacks at home. This cinnamon apple chips is an ultimate snack you can enjoy any time of the week.

Try it as a pre workout snack, add them to your kids lunchbox or enjoy between the meals.

How to prepare apples for the air fryer

Choose variety of apples like Fuji, Golden delicious, pink lady or other juicy and sweet kinds. Wash them really well .

Using a sharp knife cut even thin slices (as thin as you can). Its important to cut apples thin and even so they cook evenly. Thin slices take less time to get crunchy.

If you have a slicer, use it. I don’t have one so i just tried to measure the thickness with my eye. I left the core inside, you can remove it with special tool or just try to cut it out with a small sharp knife.

Optionally you can cut an apple in half and remove the core this way. Chips will get smaller but the flavor will remain the same. Try it!

Temperature and time.

Go with a low temperature to get the best results. I tried 300 degrees for about 15 minutes. If you put apples in one layer, it will be enough, if you overlap them then you may want to cook them a bit longer, as long as you rotate apples slices and flip them.

When i made this recipe, i had one apple slice cut really thick so when other slices were done, i needed to continue cooking that piece until it was crispy, another 2 minutes.

Watch for burned ends! Apples and air fryers are different so watch your batch closely and adjust time and temperature accordingly.

Dont overcrowd the air fryer basket too much. Cook in batches for the best results. I had about 1 batch for one medium size apple.

USE THE MANDOLINE.

You will get the best results using the mandoline to slice apples instead of cutting them yourself. Keep it on the thinnest setting.

Storage instructions

Store air fryer apple chips in the air tight container on the counter. Ziplock bag are also good and work especially well if you need to take chips with you for a walk or in the car. Very convenient.

Chips will stay fresh for a few days but its best to eat them withing first 24 hours.

Ingredients

  • 1 apple
  • pinch of cinnamon

Instructions

  • Slice apple using a mandolin on a thinnest setting. Or cut by hand but be ready to cook those slices a bit longer.*
  • Place apple slices in to the air fryer basket. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired. Cook on 300 degrees for 15 minutes. Shake apple chips and rotate them inside the basket once or twice.
  • They should crisp right in the air fryer. If not, let them sit on the counter for a few minutes after the cooking is done, it will help them to get hard and crisp up.

Notes

* Leave the skin on the apple. You don’t have to core it either.
